What Counts as an Emergency Call?

Anything getting worse by the minute or shutting down the household. The common ones:

  • A braided flexi hose under a sink or vanity that has let go
  • A sewer surcharging through a gully trap or floor waste
  • A dead or leaking hot water unit
  • Gas you can smell inside or around the house, which is a gas leak job and a safety first
  • Stormwater rising over a driveway or into a garage in a downpour

A slow drip on the laundry tap can wait for morning. Water spreading through the house cannot.

Burst Pipe? What to Do While You Wait

The first job is getting the water to stop, and you can do that before anyone arrives.

Isolate the supply

The stopcock is at the water meter, usually near the front boundary. Wind the tap clockwise until it stops, and the flow into the house cuts off.

Drain the pressure

Open the tap closest to the burst, then a lower one, so the water still sitting in the pipes runs out.

Clear the path

Lift rugs, boxes and appliances clear of the water, and use a torch from somewhere dry.

Do not touch fittings near live power

Where water has got to a power point or an appliance, stay back and mention it when you ring.

Once the supply is isolated, the damage stops growing. The repair is then a plumbing job, not a rescue.

How Does an After-Hours Call Get Priced?

Midnight or midday, that line does not change. An emergency price comes down to three points:

  • The time of the call Calls outside business hours, weekends and holidays included, are billed on the after-hours rate, confirmed before the van goes.
  • Stock on hand A fitting already in the van costs less than a part that must be ordered in the morning.
  • Getting to the fault A failed hose in an open cupboard is quicker to reach than copper buried in concrete.

Nothing gets added once the figure is agreed.

Faults That Turn Up After Dark

The infill pockets carry their own hose problem

Dual-occupancy and townhouse builds from the 2000s onward came with braided flexi hoses under every vanity and kitchen cupboard, and those hoses have a shorter life than the copper they connect.

Hot water units give out without a warning shot

Many homes still run the electric storage unit fitted when the house was built in the late 1980s or 1990s, and a tank that old can fail with no notice, often leaving a replacement as the only sensible fix.

Summer storms load the low side

Down toward Four Mile Creek Road the southern streets are the low ground, and a heavy Hunter thunderstorm can overload the stormwater there and force water up out of gully traps. If the yard is going under, that is an emergency call, not a wait-until-Monday one.

Why the Estate's Age Matters at 2am

A fast build left budget fittings behind

The estate went up quickly, and many brick-veneer homes still carry the budget joints and quick-connect fittings of that era, which tend to weep and then let go decades later.

Roots find the older sewer joints

Trees planted in the original gardens now reach down through reactive clay to the buried sewer, and once roots fill a joint, a slow drain can become a gully trap spilling onto the path overnight.

The Steps After You Ring

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4915 2998 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

Make it safe, then fix it

The plumber shuts off the water or gas, secures the area, then talks you through the repair before any further work starts.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

When We're Not the Right Call

Water escaping between the meter and the street is on Hunter Water's pipe, so you report it to them and they repair it. Gas escaping from the meter is for the gas network to isolate before we touch anything. And if a dead hot water unit comes down to a tripped circuit, the fix is an electrician's, and we point you to one.

Emergency Questions, Answered

Do you come out on weekends and public holidays?

Yes. Christmas Day and long weekends included, someone picks up. Weekend and holiday bookings are charged at the after-hours rate, and you are told that rate before the van is sent, so the invoice holds no surprises.

What should I do about a burst pipe before you arrive?

Shut the stopcock beside the meter, then open the taps nearest the split so the lines empty. Lift what the water would ruin and stay away from wet electrical fittings. Past that point, leave the pipe alone until the plumber gets there.

Is a gas smell something you handle?

We repair gas leaks on the property side, but safety comes first. With gas in the air, move the household outdoors, leave switches and anything that sparks untouched, and call the gas network's emergency number from the footpath. When the network has made it safe, we handle the repair and testing.

Can you supply hot water the same night a unit dies?

Yes. Plenty of dead units are fixable where they stand, and when one is not, a temporary hot water tank can go in that night so the showers run until the new system arrives. You see each option and its figure before we start.
